Dream House Explained: What Really Happened?

Alright guys, I know you’ve been waiting for this! The one and only Dream House Explained is finally here! We’ve done all of our homework on this one so let’s dive right in! Let’s start off with the obvious question: what exactly is a Dream House? Since there are so many different kinds of houses out there, this is an important question to ask. A Dream House is a house that you’ve always wanted to live in, but you know it’s just not practical. Or, on the other hand, it’s kind of just a house that you’ve always wanted that doesn’t exist, but you know it does.

Dream Houses are definitely cool, but you may not have known that the real purpose of them is to help us define our dreams. But what true true meanings do they hold, and how do we know they’re accurate?

In the world of real estate, the real estate market is a heated one. In a day and age where there are increasingly more options for people to buy home, the value of a home has been compromised. The wisdom of buying a house can be boiled down to a few simple rules: Living in a house is a great investment for the future, if you plan correctly.

Jim Sheridan directed the psychological crime thriller Dream House in 2011. The story concerns a family that has just purchased and moved into a home only to discover that the previous occupant murdered his family there years ago, and that the killer may be returning. Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts headline the cast; curiously, all three are British actors portraying American characters. The film contains a few of surprises, but nothing unexpected, and it’s a nice catch-up movie. The storyline and conclusion of the film Dream House are described here.

The following are connections to important elements of the film:

The Plot of Dream House

What we believe is happening

Dream-House-Explained-What-Really-Happened

The opening act of the film leads us to think that Will Atenton, his wife Libby, and their two children have just purchased and moved into a new home. Soon after, we learn that a guy called Peter Ward killed his family at this home five years earlier. Will and his family are now being followed by a strange figure they believe is Peter. As a consequence, Will visits Peter in the mental institution where he is being treated.

Will Atenton (W1-1L 8-10-10): who is he?

Will is revealed to be Peter Ward, who was shot in the head and accused with the murder of his family when he was taken to the hospital 5 years ago. Peter takes on a new identity under the name Will Atenton based on the ID on his tag: W1-1L 8-10-10, unable to face the loss of his family and the likelihood that he was to blame. Peter is finally released after 5 years, and he walks out into the world as Will. Will quits his job to become a writer in the opening scene of Dream House. But it was just in his head; he was about to be released, and the individuals we see as his coworkers are really fellow patients or employees at the mental institution.

Here’s what I find strange. There was no evidence that Peter was the assailant. Sure. He is, nevertheless, still a person who refuses to accept his own identity. Isn’t it a sign that he needs more help? I don’t know why he was released.

Peter returns to his own home as Will Atenton, which is now decrepit, but he imagines his family to be alive and well. The reality that he is Peter and that he is alone comes crashing down on him during his visit to the psychiatric institution.

What is Ann’s name?

Ann is Peter and Libby’s next-door neighbor and was a good friend of theirs. Ann’s daughter, Chloe, was Peter’s daughters’ best friend. Ann is divorced and shares custody of Chloe with her ex-husband, Jack. Ann did her hardest to assist Peter after he was hospitalized, which is why we see her in the video from the facility. Ann is taken aback when Peter reappears and identifies himself as Will Atenton, claiming he has no memory of her. This explains why Ann treats Will (Peter) oddly and is shocked to discover that he still visits his family.

What Really Happened at the End of Dream House?

Jack hired a guy called Boyce to murder Ann and reclaim custody of his home and daughter, according to the movie Dream House’s conclusion. Boyce visits Peter’s home by mistake, and when challenged, he kills Libby and the children. During the fight, a dying Libby fires at Boyce but instead clips Peter, leaving him amnesiac and the prime suspect in the murder.

Seriously, how low was Jack’s budget for the assassination? He hired a man who mistyped the location, arrived without a mask, and discovered that the lady was not Jack’s wife and that there were two children instead of one. Instead of fleeing, he chooses to murder a random family. What source did Jack use to get this individual?

Jack’s Strategy

Boyce’s blunder irritates Jack, of course. When Peter returns to the home 5 years later, Jack decides it’s time to complete what he began. He also thinks it’s a good idea to employ Boyce, the address-forgetting assassin, once again. Peter and Ann are chloroformed, taken to the basement, and the home is set on fire by Jack and Boyce. Jack takes advantage of the opportunity to shoot and murder his low-budget kid killer assassin. Peter regains consciousness and whacks Jack in the head before fleeing the home with Ann. Boyce repays the favor by lighting Jack on fire with some leftover gasoline as Jack attempts to flee.

Was Libby a ghost or simply Peter’s fantasy in the Dream House?

According to the film Dream House, Libby was a ghost. We watch her engage with the windchimes, and we view some of the sights through her eyes. Libby’s ability to influence things around her, though, strikes me as a weak aspect in the film, since she might have done a lot more at the finale to rescue Peter and Ann (push Jack into the flames, perhaps?).

I’d prefer to think of Libby as a creation of Peter’s mind. His faith that she is still with him gives him the courage to rise and defeat Jack in the end. What about the wind chimes that move? The home, after all, was on fire. It was inevitable that things would move and create noise. I don’t believe a ghost is needed to stir things up in a burning home. It’s possible that what we’re seeing is Peter’s imagination of Libby assisting him by distracting Jack.

Finally, we witness Peter return to the home, come to terms with the reality that his family is no longer with him, say his farewell to them, grab his journal, and leave the house. Ann would have testified against Jack for attempting to murder them, confirming Peter’s innocence all along, even if it was not portrayed in the movie. Peter’s dignity is restored, and he utilizes his life experience to create Dream House, a popular book.
